This programme has been designed specifically for current practising managers and professionals who wish to enhance their managerial effectiveness. It provides participants with appropriate theoretical management perspectives which can then be critically applied to the organisation and its environment.

The focus is on personal development of the student group as managers and on the managerial techniques, knowledge and skills that are required in the modern working environment. Throughout the programme students are encouraged to apply their studies to their organisation and to discuss their experiences in class to create a dynamic learning environment.

As the programme focuses on core management skills and practice, it is applicable to both public and private enterprises; the profit and not for profit sectors and small to large organisations.

Course Outline
The MA Programme consists of one taught module ’Research Methods’ (20 M-level credits) and a Management Research Report module (40 M Credits) of 11,000–15,000 words. This takes a minimum of six months to complete.

Management Research Report
This will involve a detailed examination of contextual and methodological factors and result in well supported proposals for modification of existing relevant management practices. Each candidate will be allocated a tutor who will advise as appropriate and who will also act as an examiner of the final dissertation.

Details
Following an initial session to discuss the suitability of projects that might be undertaken, students attend a Research Methods course. The successful completion of the Research Methods module is a pre-condition of further progress – this progress is therefore dependent upon the approval of the student’s full proposal of the area/topic to be investigated. Regular reports on progress are required from the student – these are built into the period of registration.

Prospective members are then registered for the MA and have 12 months to complete.

Entry Requirements

Postgraduate Certificate and Diploma in Management Studies
Prospective CMS/DMS members are required to attend an interview and will be able to negotiate credit exemptions which will be given in line with normal University procedures. They will normally be expected to hold a degree and to have other relevant experience and/or qualifications. There are two entry points to the CMS stage - September and May - and to the DMS stage - May and January.

MA in Management Studies
Students who have obtained a pass in a recent Diploma in Management Studies (DMS) at Master’s level, or who have 120 M-level credits, or who have a Master’s in a related subject are eligible to attend the Research Methods course. Students who do not possess a DMS may be admitted under the Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL) system – which provides a route for students with differing educational qualifications and substantial supervisory/managerial experiences.

There are three entry points (January, May and September) to the Research Methods courses.
