Course Description
By drawing upon both the natural and social sciences, our degree programme offers an exciting and thought provoking approach to environmental management.
First Year
In the first year you will study modules that cover such issues as sustainable development, biodiversity, ecosystems, environmental change and research techniques. In particular, you will explore ways in which we can use our resources more sustainably and how individuals view the environment and their impacts. You will also develop your understanding of biodiversity and how ecosystems function in the light of climate change. You will also spend time developing research skills that are dependent on using geographic information systems, data analysis, surveying and map work.
Central to your first year is a week-long residential field course in the first semester, held in the English Lake District. This field course is designed to introduce you to a range of key field skills and approaches to studying the environment. The field trip also plays a central role in you being able to get to know other students on your programme of study, some of whom will no doubt become friends for life.
Second Year
Your second year begins with a week-long field course held in the Swiss Alps. This field course, and the associated follow-up research methods modules, play a central part in the development of your research skills in preparation for your final year research project.
In the second year, you will study modules that seek to develop your knowledge of how the world can be understood as changing, with the topic areas of ecology and environmental quality forming a central part of your studies. Areas of optional study include geospatial information and rural development.
Final Year
Forming a central part of your final year studies is the individual research project which you will undertake under the direct and expert supervision of an academic member of staff.
Complementing your studies will be core modules focused on developing your understanding of how we can tackle and better manage the key environmental issues of our time. You will also be afforded the opportunity to study optional modules covering such topics as conservation, countryside management and geospatial information.
