Course Description

Geology is defined as "the scientific study of the origin, history, and structure of the Earth", but almost everything we utilize in our lives has something to do with Earth. Homes, streets, computers, toys, tools, and so on are likely made of materials obtained from the Earth.

Today we live in a time when the Earth and its inhabitants face many challenges. Our climate is changing and that change is being caused by human activity, Earth scientists recognized this problem and will play a key role in efforts to resolve it. We are also challenged to: develop new sources of energy that will have minimal impact on climate; locate new sources of metals and other mineral resources as known sources are depleted; and, determine how Earth's increasing population can live and avoid serious threats such as volcanic activity, earthquakes, landslides, floods and more. These are just a few of the problems where solutions depend upon a deep understanding of Earth science. Geology is very important to life as we know it for several reasons. Though the term 'geologist' conjures up an image of a man out looking at rocks, the geologist of today uses tools such as business models and computers to make important contributions to our civilization today, but, of course, no geologist is without their rock hammer when they are out exploring in the field. In a word, Geology is on the basis of everything, so, to learn about it means to improve our capability to live on our wonderful planet. This course has this aim, and furthermore it wants also to create a conscious relationship with the environment, brushing up our awareness of being earthlings.

The Campania region is a perfect place to learn by seeing a wide scenario of geological features,  from volcanism, to carbonate structures, and a unique site where geology is absolutely linked  with the culture.
