The opportunity to pursue individual specialist topics within mathematics education is actively encouraged and supported.

The course consists of two taught modules and a dissertation. In the first of the two taught courses, participants will have a wide ranging introduction to the study of mathematics education as an academic discipline. The second course will introduce methods for research in education and then go on to provide opportunities for individual work on a specialist topic within mathematics education. The dissertation, a research-based study in mathematics education, is to be completed by the end of the programme.

It is likely that this course will appeal to practising mathematics teachers, mathematics teacher educators and other educational professionals. Teaching experience is welcome but so are applications from those just beginning or considering a career in mathematics education. Students on the course are likely to have a degree in mathematics and/or a professional qualification in mathematics teaching. The course will be designed to allow a useful interchange of ideas between those with a strong background in mathematics and those with significant teaching experience.
