Course Summary

Course Description

Nurturing the early stages of development and learning in children is the cornerstone of providing quality education. As interest in educationally oriented child care programs intensifies and enrollment for preschool and elementary grades increases, teaching careers in preschool, kindergarten, and early elementary school are poised for tremendous growth.

The Becker College early childhood education concentration is a licensure program approved by the Massachusetts Department of Education that provides career preparation for teaching kindergarten through Grade 2 (K-2). Students become familiar with various strategies used to guide children in developing vital social, language, and fine motor skills. Methods for introducing kindergarten and early elementary school children to studies such as language arts, science, math, and social studies are also covered.

Required practica at pre-kindergarten (pre-K) and K-2 levels include planning, implementing, and assessing activities with children, and customizing individual education programs and diversity plans at developmentally appropriate levels. The early childhood education concentration fulfills the requirements of the Early Childhood Education Licensure program overseen by the Massachusetts Department of Education.
