Course Description
You will study four modules in Year 1, two of which (‘Elements of Criticism’ and ‘Modes of Reading’) are compulsory. In Year 2, you will take two core modules covering Shakespeare and the Eighteenth Century; there are also numerous optional modules, e.g. ‘Poetry since 1945’, ‘Angels, Madwomen and Whores: Women’s writing in the C19th’, ‘Beat Literature’, ‘The Rise of the Novel’, and ‘Writing and Editing’: you will take up to four of these. In Year 3, the compulsory modules are ‘Romantics and Victorians’ and ‘Late-Victorian and Modern Literary Studies’; options include ‘From the Vote to the Pill’, ‘The Book of Nature: Ecocritical studies’, ‘Reading Ireland in the 1990s: Fiction, Poetry, Drama’, ‘Nineteenth- and Twentieth-Century American Literature’, ‘The Ulster Scots Literary Tradition’, and many more.
