Course Description
Our subject is right for you if:
- You are intrigued by the extraordinary power of cinema - as both an art form and as entertainment - and want to know more
- You are interested in how cinema functions as a complex combination of industrial processes for making money and cultural resources for making meaning
- You are willing to read widely about cinema, familiarize yourself with a wide variety of films, read widely about the media generally, history, society, and culture, and to relate your reading and film viewing to the debates and arguments you'll encounter throughout your studies
- You recognize that academic 'theory' is useful for situating the immediacy of familiar cultural phenomena in deeper frameworks of understanding, and you are not afraid of new ideas.
In recognition of the fact that the cinema has had an important impact on all the arts and upon the structures of modern culture, Film Studies is now an established part of the curriculum in most major universities. In the University of Ulster, Film Studies is an inter-disciplinary subject which draws on historical contexts, aesthetic concerns, and (to a lesser degree) textual analysis to study cinema as an agent of global cultural exchange.
