Course Description
Students normally undertake the equivalent of six modules in each of the academic years.
Year 1
Students will study modules in, Construction Law, Domestic Construction Technology, Measurement, Construction Business Management, Economics, Building Services Technology and CAD for Surveyors.
Year 2
The core themes in terms of Construction Technology, Measurement and Cost Management are further developed in second year in three modules in Commercial Construction Technology, Commercial Measurement and Commercial Management. These three modules are accompanied by modules in Construction Contracts, Procurement and Contract Administration and finally Estimating & Cost Planning.
Year 3
Students are normally required to undertake a twelve month period of supervised work experience in an approved professional environment, where academic knowledge is reinforced and applied to practical work situations. Satisfactory completion of this placement year will lead to the award of Diploma in Professional Practice (DPP) upon graduation. This period may also contribute towards the requirements of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) Assessment of Professional Competence.
Year 4
Students return to a final year of study, which is designed to integrate and develop the knowledge and skills already gained.
Modules studied in final year are Civil Engineering Technology, Advanced Measurement, Project Management, Construction Economics and an integrated QS Project module which is designed to combine the various strands studied previously into one integrated assessment to reflect industrial practice. Finally a key enlarged module within this year is the dissertation where students select a topic area of particular personal professional interest and carry out supervised research.
