Course DescriptionTOEFL Preparation
The ELI offers a 5 hour per week TOEFL Preparation Course for students to learn the format of and prepare for the Internet-based TOEFL test (iBT).
Students will develop skills and strategies for writing the TOEFL essay. The instructor will cover areas of writing such as understanding the topic, speed outlining, idea development, introductory paragraphs, support paragraphs, concluding paragraphs, transitions, editing, and sentence structure. Students do weekly written assignments and become more comfortable and confident taking the 30-minute test.
By the end of the course, students should be able to:
1. anticipate the format of each section to save time on reading directions.
2. recognize question types and use a strategy to answer them.
3. apply sophisticated guessing techniques to questions they do not know.
4. pace themselves so that they don't run out of time at the end of a section.
5. approach the exam with confidence.
Students will use real tests and learn various test-taking strategies. A comprehensive review of English grammar and vocabulary specific to the TOEFL exam is included within the course curriculum.
The ELI Offers a 9 hour per week GMAT Preparation Course specifically designed for non-native English speakers that is composed of 6 hours of Qualitative (verbal) and 3 hours of Quantitative (math) review per week.
This course is designed for students who plan to take the Graduate Management Admission Test. Students will learn the format, typical questions and common test taking strategies to achieve the highest score on this test. The course will offer practice in the different sections of the test, including critical reasoning, reading comprehension, data sufficiency, problem-solving and sentence correction. Students will be able to anticipate the format of each section to save time on reading directions, recognize question types and use a strategy to answer them, apply sophisticated guessing techniques to questions they do not know, pace themselves so that they don't run out of time at the end of a section, approach the exam with confidence. A practice test will be given regularly throughout the term. Students will mark their own tests and be responsible for analyzing their own mistakes at home. Questions from that analysis will be discussed in class.
