Course Summary

Course Description

The main focus of the BEng(Hons) Building Surveying degree involves the identification, analysis, evaluation and subsequent solving of problems associated with the technological, economic and legal issues encountered in the field of Building Surveying. This 'problem-centric' approach develops intellectual skills and engages students with the building surveying process. The importance for students to appreciate the significance of the subject matter in relation to their own particular working environment is considered to be fundamental.

The academic content of the Building Surveying course is approached in a manner which will encourage and develop an awareness of the contribution students are able to make in the improvement of both their employer’s interests and their own career prospects.

The UCLan Building Surveying course enjoys dual accreditation by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB). This professional recognition acknowledges the stimulating combination of subjects covering the wide knowledge base of the building surveyor. Studies focus on the construction of both new and existing buildings together with the materials used in this construction process. As the course progresses, greater emphasis is placed upon the selection of materials used in the construction and how this selection can influence the performance of a building during its life.
