Five celebs who studied abroad
Going to study abroad can be a terrifying prospect. Your mum and dad will no longer be a train away, you may not be totally fluent in the language and you’re super worried abut leaving your friends behind and making new ones. Well at least be in the comfort that these celebs know what you’re going through and it made them all the better for it.
- American actress Gwyneth Paltrow is right at home in England with a cuppa and custard cream, but she swapped roast dinners for paella when at the age of fifteen she moved to Spain as an exchange student. she recounts that the experience “changed her life” and has since said that she views Spain as her “second home”.
- Hangover and Limitless star Bradley Cooper studied French for six months in Aix- en Provence when he was a student. The Georgetown graduate is reportedly fluent and said the move was prompted by film Chariots of Fire. Cooper reminisced about the scene which inspired his desire to learn French: "So there's a scene where a guy was speaking French and I thought, 'Man, that sounds so cool. I want to learn French.' "
- J K Rowling, author of the hugely popular Harry Potter series, took a year out of studying ar Exeter to study in France as part of her French and Classics degree. Perhaps this stay in France is what inspired beaux baton girls and Triwizard competitor Fluer Delacour.
- South African political activist and retired clergy-man Desmond Tutu studied at Kings College London gaining his bachelors and masters degree. He said the experience “opened up a whole new world for me”.
- World famous fashion designer coveted by brides to be Vera Wang was raised in New York, but spent time taking art history and language modules at the University of Paris-Sorbonne. According to a biography by Katherine Krohn, "the architecture, fashion, and design of Paris inspired her, and reawakened her lifelong love of art".
