A
global economy
All over the world borders are breaking down and a global
economy is being created which in turn is reinforced
by continued European economic integration. Employers
today demand graduates who are prepared to work in an
international setting and who are able to solve economic
problems with an international perspective. Thus, globalisation
has even stretched into the field of education. More
and more students opt for courses at a foreign university
to gain a solid background for an international career
in a rapidly changing international world.
Responding to these developments, the Faculty of Economics
and Econometrics of the Universiteit van Amsterdam offers
one Bachelor of Science program and three Master of
Science programmes, which are taught entirely in English
(www.fee.uva.nl/english):
· BSc in Economics and Business
· MSc in Economics
· MSc in Econometrics
· MSc Real Estate Finance
The FEE also offers a Master in Philosophy and PhD programmes
(www.tinbergen.nl)
and some executive programmes (www.agbs.nl):
· Master Programme in International Finance
· Executive Master of Finance and Control |
Universiteit
van Amsterdam
In 1632, when Amsterdam was one of the world's most
important ports and trading centres, the Athenaeum Illustre
was founded in Amsterdam to educate students in History
and Philosophy. Until the nineteenth century, the Athenaeum
remained a small institution. In 1877 the Athenaeum
Illustre became the Universiteit van Amsterdam and was
permitted to confer the highest educational degrees.
In 1900, there were 900 students at the Universiteit
van Amsterdam. This figure had risen to 2,500 by 1935
and to 7,500 by 1960. More and more fields of study
and research were introduced, and new university departments
were established. Starting with one small building,
the Universiteit van Amsterdam has become the largest
university in the country, with ± 26,000 students
- of whom 2,500 come from abroad - over 5,000 staff
and a budget of € 400 million It is one of the
major comprehensive universities in Europe. It has a
strong internationalisation programme and offers a large
number of courses taught in English language courses.
It draws students and academics from all over the world.
There are seven faculties, covering humanities, social
science, law, economics, medicine, dentistry and sciences.
The Universiteit van Amsterdam is well respected throughout
Europe and beyond.

Bachelor
of Science in Economics and Business
Faculty of Economics and Econometrics is offering a
Bachelor of Sciences Programme in Economics and Business
that is entirely taught in English with specialisations
in International Economics, International Industrial
Organisation and International Economics and Finance.
The programme is characterised by a strong international
focus. Students are encouraged to study abroad or to
take an international internship.
Another important characteristic of the programme is
a quantitative approach. In the increasingly complex
economic environment a solid quantitative background
is necessary and often demanded by employers.
During the first and second year, therefore, students
receive a sound training in economics, business, mathematics
and statistics, which will be of use to them in their
entire future international careers.
Other aspects of the programme are the international
composition of the students taking them and the cosmopolitan
character of Amsterdam, a city where many foreigners
live and work, and a city, which is the financial and
economic heart of the Netherlands.

The
city of Amsterdam
The City of Amsterdam is the capital of the Netherlands,
and is one of Europe's most frequently visited cities.
According to the Lonely Planet 'Amsterdam combines a
huge case of big city exuberance with small-town manageability;
it doesn't take much more than chaining your bike to
a bridge to feel like you've got a handle on the place.'
It is this mix which makes Amsterdam a pleasure, both
to visit and as a home. It is a real cosmopolitan capital,
and one of Europe's most beautiful at that, with an
enormous number of attractions. It is also relatively
small, peaceful, well ordered and an easy place to find
your way around.
The historic city centre is famous for its monuments
and canals. Amsterdam also has an outstanding, and well-deserved,
reputation for the variety of entertainment it provides.
If you visit the tourist websites, for example www.visitamsterdam.nl,
or for a less formal view see the Lonely Planet, Time
Out or Rough Guides sites, you will find an unmatched
list of possibilities. On top of that, Amsterdam has
always been known for its free intellectual environment,
which has had a very stimulating effect on the international
exchange of ideas and research. Amsterdam has continuously
proven itself to be an important centre for cultural,
social and financial developments. Perhaps more important
for the visitor is its liberal approach to social issues.
The city has a mix of cultures and ethnic groups that
are made welcome here in a manner that is probably unmatched
within Europe.
With its proximity to the international airport, Schiphol,
about half an hour from the University, there is easy
access to all parts of the world. A few hours' journey
will take you to most other European cities. Cities
such as Barcelona, Berlin, Edinburgh, Paris, London,
and Rome are easily within reach for a long weekend.
Public transport around Amsterdam and the Netherlands
is also excellent and this is a great help for day-to-day
living and for visiting the Netherlands and its neighbours.
A study of the quality of life in 215 major cities world-wide
ranked Amsterdam 12th out of 215 (William M. Mercer,
London, 2001) and Time Out has called Amsterdam 'in
a nutshell, one of the most consistently surprising,
thrilling, intriguing, (and) compelling cities on earth.'
William Mercer's have also evaluated Amsterdam as one
of the cheapest capital cities in Europe - only Lisbon
offered a lower cost of living.
