City of
Sunderland
Sunderland
is Britain's newest city, and one of the fastest growing
in Europe. Around 300,000 people live and work here, on
England's North-East coast. Sunderland is a changing city.
Today, more than 60 major companies from a dozen different
countries have a base in Sunderland. Over£1,000 million
has been invested and, led by the extraordinary success
of the Japanese car maker Nissan, Sunderland now has a new,
diverse and thriving manufacturing economy, with world-class
facilities. This dynamic, confident approach is reflected
across the city with new public parks, restoration of historic
buildings, new road systems, covered shopping areas, a pedestrianised
city centre, office development, and landscaped business
parks.
Facilities
One of the most noticeable changes to Sunderland
is the University's own contribution. A new, award winning,
campus (St Peter's) has been constructed on the banks of Sunderland's
River Wear. University facilities at St Peter's and the Chester
Road Campus in the heart of the city include four libraries
and resource centres. Both campuses are within walking distance
of University accommodation and there are several University
restaurants.
Accommodation
and Welfare
The
University provides a choice of high quality purpose-built
halls of residence with over 3000 places in University managed
properties. Most rooms are single study bedrooms. There
are some rooms suitable for families, and students with
special needs. New postgraduate hall with en suite rooms.
The cost of living in Sunderland is generally lower than
in other parts of the UK.

campus libraries have recently been refurbished. Staff work
closely with academic colleagues to provide the information
collections and services required to support your learning.
Each provides a full service for lending, enquiries, reference,
photocopying, computer printing and inter-library loans. Our
comprehensive collections now comprise over 400,000 volumes,
1,800 current periodicals, 90,000slides and 5,000 videos.
In addition to textbooks and periodicals, a wealth of electronic
information is available through the campus IT network.
Electronic Information Services Information
Services has a comprehensive CD-ROM and multimedia network
with over 150 databases and 3,000 electronic journals, and
you can search many other online sources, document delivery
services and the Internet. The library's advanced computer
system enables you to issue and return books yourself, and
renew and reserve books from any computer on the campus
network. The online catalogue is also a gateway to other
electronic services and local libraries.
