At Brooks Institute, we continue a tradition of over 67 years of educational excellence and commitment to preparing our students for a rewarding career in the visual and media arts. The visual image lies at the center of how our culture perceives itself and communicates through photography, motion picture, video and graphic design; media utilized in virtually every industry. Brooks Institute operates as a private, four-year media and communication arts college through our philosophy of learning by doing. This sustained hands-on approach makes our graduates responsible, resourceful and accomplished in reaching their goals. Mission
Brooks Institute educates a diverse student body of aspiring professionals to pursue careers in the visual, new media, and communication arts. Our multi-disciplinary approach promotes collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity to help develop graduates who are technologically adept and visually sophisticated with high standards of professional ethics. Brooks Institute's faculty of many industry professionals and academics offer experiential training to prepare students for a life of continuous learning in complex and changing environments.

Our Location
Located on California's Southern Pacific coast, Brooks Institute is nestled in an area often referred to as the "American Riviera." The campus lies between the Santa Ynez Mountains and the Pacific Ocean, providing students with enjoyable weather, scenery, and outdoor activity throughout most of the year. Ideally situated among a variety of vistas and visually inspiring features, Brooks Institute is close to Los Angeles, a well-known hub for industry professionals in film, photography and graphic design.

Formerly a motion picture studio, the campus is set on eight acres complete with a movie back lot, large sound stages, a screening room, digital video editing studios, and a post-production facility, as well as graphic design computer labs and studios. The campus houses faculty and administrative offices and offers services such as academic counseling, financial aid, academic affairs, admissions, career services and the library.

BFA Film
The Film program is dedicated to creative and technical excellence in the craft and business of film and new media. The program aims to builds a strong connection to the industry through its award-winning faculty and alumni, with some working throughout Hollywood. Located near Los Angeles and close to the beach, the campus is housed in a former working movie studio with a back lot and several large sound stages. Extensive production resources include permanent sets, green screen, Red One cameras, editing labs with Avid, Pro Tools, and Adobe software, and a post-production center with sound recording and mixing rooms. From the first semester you can build hands-on skills and knowledge leading to a highly mentored portfolio production.

BFA Graphic Design
The Graphic Design program provides an intensive, hands-on, project-based learning environment. Projects are specifically designed to reflect 'real-world' scenarios. Students are challenged to combine creative design strategies and thinking with emerging industry-relevant technology to develop web sites, logos, posters, advertising, magazines, packaging, and other items to meet targeted marketing needs.

BFA Professional Photography
The Professional Photography program provides a mentored, learn-by-doing environment dedicated to the creation of outstanding, professional-quality images. Students develop a visual vocabulary of photography and design culminating in a specialized portfolio experience. Santa Barbara is a spectacular visual environment for photography and the curriculum includes opportunities for international travel. The program is strongly connected to the industry worldwide through its legacy and its network of professionals who often participate in the classroom and who provide highly specialized internship opportunities.

BS Visual Journalism
Students in the Visual Journalism program are immersed in the field of nonfiction storytelling from the very first day, creating compelling stories about people and the world. Our students study photojournalism, audio documentary, multimedia journalism, documentary film production, web design and writing, learning how to best utilize each medium to tell the most engaging story. Global storytelling, portraits, music, news and international documentary trips are a few of the many areas students are able to specialize in. Internships in the field round out the learning experience. In Visual Journalism, we capture life.

MFA Photography
The MFA in Photography program is a low-residency program dedicated to the development of the distinctive voice of the photographer as a fine artist. Courses set a framework that allows students to develop a depth of knowledge about image-making in context with the art, science, and aesthetics of photography. From this foundation, students engage in intense dialog and critique, developing a culminating body of work that represents deeply personal reflections and intellectual considerations. The program stresses the exploration of processes and materials so that each student may articulate a creative and unique vision.
