Cutting-edge research
Both theoretical and applied research can be found in our School, with much of it addressing the important issues currently being faced by commercial businesses, public sector bodies and not-for-profit organisations.
We are recognised for being at the forefront of research in areas such as: business ethics and corporate social responsibility; organisation studies; leadership and strategy; finance and banking; risk management; and international management research. We were ranked second in the UK for accounting and finance research*, with 95 per cent of our research graded as being of international quality.

In addition, a number of research groups operate within Essex Business School, acting as a focus for research activity in areas such as accounting, finance, entrepreneurship and management. You will be able to tap into this resource through talks, seminars and events, run by the various groups throughout the academic year.

Research examples
The real impact of carbon offsetting
Dr Steffen Boehm at Essex Business School has led research into the multi-billion-pound business of carbon offsetting. Essex researchers have warned carbon offsetting has not delivered a reduction in greenhouse gases and advised businesses to undertake initiatives closer to home.
Pinstripe Mafia: How Accountancy Firms Destroy Societies
Professor Prem Sikka looks at what he terms the “dark side of capitalism” whether that is accountancy, auditing, tax avoidance, or corporate governance. His research has explored tax scams, money laundering, tax havens, audit failures, insolvency abuses, bribery, corruption and the visible hand of financial intermediaries and thus connect the dots to current economic crises.
