LOCATION

Five Towns College in Dix Hills, New York is a small college located in a suburban community approximately 35 miles from New York City. The proximity of the College provides an advantage to those interested in the arts, whether it is music, theatrical or fine arts, as we are only an hour train ride to New York City from the campus.

Long Island features many attractions inclusive of small towns and villages where fine restaurants and shopping are abundant. Our world class white sandy beaches such as Jones Beach and the Hamptons are only an hour or so from the College by automobile. We are also noted for many outstanding malls and outlet stores if you prefer to shop, otherwise you may enjoy yourself participating in an incredible assortment of art and culture located in nearby museums, arboretums and historical sites that will spark your imagination.

DEGREES

Five Towns College is one of very few colleges in New York State that offer degrees in Jazz/Commercial Music at both the Master's and Doctoral level. The Master of Music (M.M.) requires the satisfactory completion of 36 credits of approved graduate courses including a research project. Music Education students will also be required to complete 25 hours of field experience in order to satisfy the degree requirements.

Prospective students can enroll at the Master's level with a concentration in Music Performance, Music Technology (Audio Recording), Composition and Arranging, Music History, Choral Conducting and Music Education. Some of the courses that are offered in these respective concentrations are Electronic Music Composition, Advanced Improvisation, Jazz Harmony, Film Scoring, Advanced Choral Conducting, MIDI Concepts, Commercial Music Style, Ensembles and many more graduate offerings listed in the College catalogue.

The Doctor of Musical Arts (D.M.A) is intended for those planning to work at the most advanced level of academic musical occupations. This degree requires completing 60 credits of Doctoral work.

Concentrations at the Doctoral level are in Music Performance, Composition and Arranging, Music Education, Music History and Literature. Some of the courses offered in these respective concentrations are College Teaching, Doctoral Research, Jazz History, Jazz/Commercial Piano,Jazz Pedagogy and many others which are noted in the college catalogue

SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

Five Towns College offers scholarships to qualified graduate students on a yearly basis. These scholarships range up to $9000 per year, based on talent and merit. To receive the graduate scholarship yearly, the international graduate student must maintain a 3.0 GPA or better.

AUDITIONS

All students must audition to be reviewed by the Graduate Music Division. You can audition by sending in a DVD or a live audition through the internet, or by calling to schedule an audition appointment on campus. Please refer to our website for further audition requirements at www.ftc.edu.

FACULTY AND FACILITIES

The graduate faculty at Five Towns College are highly qualified as experts in their fields of study. Some of our faculty include Dr. Miller-Thorn, a composer of two symphonies and numerous piano works; Dr. Moon, professional harpsichordist and pianist; Professor Spaneas, a saxophone soloist, composer, recording artist and international performer and Professor Saulter, an international guitarist and performer, and Professor Lipton, Music Division Chair and a professional Choral Director who has performed at Avery Fisher Hall in Lincoln Center and Saint Peter's Cathedral in New York City.

Our facilities include a graduate library, featuring thousands of arrangements from The Boston Pops Orchestra and an extensive archival sheet music collection. There are volumes of music books, periodicals and manuscripts available as well.

Our audio recording studios feature the SSL9000J 72 channel recording console in Studio A, while Studio B has a 32 channel console for students to use. Studio C is an all digital facility using Pro Tools software with HD and plasma televisions. The MIDI laboratory is equipped with MacIntosh G-5 computers and KORG Triton keyboards using Finale, Reason and Digital Performer software.

The College also has practice rooms, a keyboard laboratory and a theatre. Adjoining the College is The Dix Hills Performing Arts Center where theatre, musical performances and ensembles of nearly every genre and description are attended by both our students and the general public.

The Residence Life facilities are a complex of four residence halls. Each building has single and double rooms, each room having its own private bathroom, Internet access, cable TV and telephone services. Tuition for these residence life facilities include a meal plan.

ADMISSIONS

The College has a rolling admissions policy, so that you can apply at any time. You may apply online on our website or you can download an application to mail with your other documents. Applicants must have a G.P.A. of 2.75 as a Master's candidate and a G.P.A. of a 3.0 or better as a Doctoral candidate. Candidates must submit a TOEFL score or an ITELTS score to show proof of their reading, writing listening and speaking ability of the English language. All transcripts are required from previous colleges attended, as well as two letters of recommendation for Master's degree candidates and three letters of recommendation for Doctoral degree candidates. Doctoral candidates must also submit a 1500 word essay on their proposed thesis. All students must also submit a copy of their Visa and passport along with supporting financial documentation.
