Luxembourg School of Finance
Luxembourg is a small country of 500.000 people, in the heart of Europe straddling the French and German cultures, a founding member of the European Union. It hosts a sizeable, world-class financial centre, major industries such as steel and chemicals, and is the seat of several European Union (EU) institutions. Luxembourg boasts an extremely international environment and a very agreeable quality of life.
It is home to the University of Luxembourg and its Faculty of Law, Economics and Finance. The Faculty offers an excellent environment of teaching to students and researchers alike, thanks to the proximity of and close interaction with the institutions of the EU (e.g. Court of Justice of the EU, European Investment Bank), as well as Luxembourg's financial centre and legal industry. The Faculty runs a Doctoral School in Economics and Finance and one in Law.
In addition, it offers 7 Master programmes, 3 Bachelor and 3 professional programmes. With students from over 80 different countries, professors from over 15 countries, and exchange agreements with over 25 leading universities around the world, the Faculty offers an outstanding environment of teaching and research in the fields of law, economics and finance. Many faculty graduates find a job in their field directly after their graduation in Luxembourg.
Law (Instruction in French and English)
The Faculty offers an environment with a truly comparative approach to legal issues. At the Master's level it offers 3 LL.M. programmes namely in European Economic Law, European and International Financial Law , as well as European Law. This is well-suited to the international nature of Luxembourg's economy: as a small country, it is largely dependent on a legal infrastructure that includes European, and also Banking and Financial law. After graduation, students begin careers at law firms and companies, at the European institutions or continue their studies at the doctoral level. The Research Unit in Law enjoys extensive links with the Luxembourg financial and legal industry communities. Many practitioners, including judges from the European Courts teach in the master programmes. The department assists students in finding internship possibilities, leading in many cases to permanent employment with a law firm or company. The University of Luxembourg is listed, for a second year in a row, in the Financial Times LLM Listing of Innovative Law Schools.
Economics (Instruction in French and English)
The Faculty offers also Master's programmes in Economics & Management. Students can choose among a Master's in Economics and Finance, Entrepreneurship and Innovation, as well as in Accounting and Audit. Graduates in Economics find employability in large public institutions or private institutions active in Luxembourg's financial sector (e.g., asset and wealth management, investment funds, insurance, private banking) or continue their studies at the doctoral level. The Entrepreneurship programme stimulates the creation and development of innovative companies by providing students with an advanced education in the fields of entrepreneurship and the management of technological and organisational change. Studies in Accounting and Audit may lead to a professional or academic career; many relevant companies and important organisations are based in Luxembourg. Leading international accounting, auditing and tax firms maintain key branches in Luxembourg.
Finance (Instruction in English)
The Luxembourg School of Finance offers two Master's programmes - MSc in Banking and Finance and a Master's in Wealth Management. Many graduates start their career directly after completion of their programme in the Luxembourg financial centre; many others find a position in another financial centre in Europe, Asia or America. The Master's in Banking and Finance features the University's own faculty in addition to internationally renowned visiting professors. In addition to its academic component, the programme features many lectures and seminars given by practitioners, specialists particular areas of finance; students may attend these freely. At the end of the academic year, students attend an academic week-in-residence at New York University Stern School of Business. The week features an intensive series of lectures and seminars in specific areas of academic finance, and is always considered by students to be a highlight of the programme.
The Luxembourg School of Finance provides placement assistance to students, for both internships and permanent positions.
The Master in Wealth Management, which will begin in fall 2013, aims to educate and train future wealth managers. The curriculum, developed in cooperation with the Private Banking Group Luxembourg, combines traditional finance subjects, with person-, legal- and tax-centric subjects. All students will have an academic supervisor and a personal industry mentor, for help and counsel on their academic and professional development.
