ABOUT SUNY ONEONTA

Established in 1889 as a state normal school, Oneonta has become a premier school of the 64-campus State University of New York system.The college enrolls 6,000 students in 70 undergraduate majors and 15 graduate programs. Academic programs are divided into five schools: the School of Arts and Humanities, the School of Economics and Business, the School of Education and Human Ecology, the School of Natural and Mathematical Sciences, and the School of Social Science.

Nestled in the hills of Central New York, the college’s idyllic setting is ideal for study, adventure and self-discovery.With a population of just under 14,000, the City of Oneonta is a safe, friendly community known for its small-town ambiance and vibrant arts and entertainment scene.Public parks and trails offer opportunities for hiking, biking, fishing, ice skating and cross country skiing in a beautiful natural environment.

Internships, service-learning activities, academic competitions and faculty-led field courses afford students many opportunities to learn by doing.

Campus facilities include a digital planetarium, observatory with the largest optical telescope in New York state, music recording studio with tunable walls, computer art lab, and DNA computing and genomics lab. A completely renovated academic building with a variety of sustainability features, including Seasons, a café featuring local, organic fare that rotates according to the growing season, opened in fall 2014. The Milne Library provides an expansive private collection and extensive electronic resources, including a new Technology Center. In nearby Cooperstown, the college has a Biological Field Station and operates the Cooperstown Graduate Program in History Museum Studies.

Student activities include government, athletics and more than 100 organizations focusing on academics, publications, performance, cultural awareness and special interests.Leadership programs provide further opportunities for students to develop lifelong skills. The college’s nationally recognized Center for Social Responsibility and Community coordinates service learning and volunteer opportunities.
SERVICES FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
A student graduating rom SUNY OneontaThe Office of International Education offers a peer mentor program to help new students adjust to life at Oneonta and hosts on and off-campus activities such as field trips, shopping, special events, social gatherings and guest speakers. Specialized workshops on topics such as health insurance and maintaining F1 and J1 status are also provided.

The Center for Academic Development and Enrichment offers peer tutoring and help with writing, study skills, reading, math and time management. The Foreign Language Labis equipped with multimedia ESL software for private, independent study outside the classroom experience.

SUNY Oneonta has nationally accredited programs in chemistry, dietetics, education, human ecology and music. The college’s business economics program is accredited by AACSB International, a designation held by less than 5 percent of business programs worldwide.

SCHOLARSHIPS
Entering international students with outstanding credentials are automatically reviewed for merit scholarships. After their first full-time semester at SUNY Oneonta, students are eligible to apply for the OAS International Scholarships. Awards range from $1,000 to $8,000 and are based on high academic achievement, demonstrated leadership, community and campus involvement, and strong faculty recommendation.
