An International Education for the New Veterinarian

St. George’s University School of Veterinary Medicine is a dynamic centre of higher education in Grenada, West Indies, and draws would-be practitioners from around the world to its progressive programmes in animal medicine. The School’s over 800 graduates have practised  in all veterinary specialties, including small and large animal practices, exotic practices, and in academic veterinary medicine and public health-related fields in countries around the world, including Canada, the UK, and South Africa..

Curriculum
St. George’s University provides a range of entry options and a firm foundation to students with varied academic qualifications in the four- to seven-year programmes that lead to the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree. Upon acceptance to the veterinary medical sciences, students may consider a joint degree, such as the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine/Master of Public Health (DVM/MPH) degree. St. George’s MPH program is accredited by the US authority for public health programmes, the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH).  SGU is one of only a few non-US institutions to receive CEPH accreditation for its MPH degree programme.

Students may also pursue a DVM/MSc degree by working with the on-campus Windward Islands Research and Education Foundation, which collaborates with internationally recognised institutions and draws international scholars and regional scientists to its studies. All veterinary medical students complete their clinical training at one of 29 affiliated veterinary universities in the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Ireland and Australia.

Excellence in Education a Given
In 2011 and 2012, graduates of the School of Veterinary Medicine attained a 100% pass rate on Great Britain’s rigorous Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons Statutory Membership examination. In 2011, the School of Veterinary Medicine DVM programme earned full accreditation by the American Veterinary Medical Association’s Council on Education, the highest standard of achievement for veterinary medical education in the United States.

Extraordinary Caribbean Campus
St. George’s $250+ (US) million campus is a bustling university city on a peninsula overlooking the sea. Over 65 state-of-the-art buildings were constructed in a major expansion over the last ten years, including a library, anatomy labs, dormitories, several restaurants, lecture halls, and a research institute. Students enjoy all the amenities of modern campus life in the middle of a tropical paradise. Over 2,000 students live on campus and others live in the surrounding neighborhoods, which are served by the University-provided free bus transportation.

Information on the University is available on the University website, and through YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter at StGeorgesU. Videos of St. George’s UK students are featured on http://www.sgu.edu/uk.
