The University of Tartu

The University of Tartu, founded in 1632, is one of the oldest universities in Northern and Eastern Europe. It is the only Estonian university in the top 3% of world’s universities (according to Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2012–2013). The university belongs to the top 1% of the world's most-cited universities and research institutions in 9 research areas (Thomson Reuters Web of Knowledge 2011). There are 9 facultiesand high-level research is also conducted in the university's 4 colleges, the Estonian Genome Centre, the University of Tartu Library and the university's interdisciplinary centers of excellence.

Established in 1632, UT has over 375 years of academic traditions and a very long,
colorful history. It is the biggest university in Estonia with more than 18 000 students. - UT is ranked among the world's top 400 universities according to the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2012 – 13.
- UT is the number 1 choice for Estonian graduates – every year at least a quarter of all high school graduates continue their studies at UT.
- Every year the University of Tartu hosts over 700 international students from more than 30 countries in its degree and semester programs, which makes it a truly multicultural study and living environment.
- UT offers 11 international study programmes in English including business administration, medicine and software engineering. Also, there are very unique programs such as wellness and spa management, semiotics and sound engineering.
- E-stonia! Estonia boasts an advanced economy which ranks highly for press freedom, economic freedom, political freedom, and education. It is the birthplace of Skype, and Estonia's e-government, e-parking, and e-elections have created a reputation for E-stonia. In fact, there is free wifi throughout the country.
- UT is located in Tartu, Estonia's second city. It is known as the "City of Good Thoughts" and is considered the "Cultural Capital of Estonia." Locals strongly believe that anyone who visits Tartu will be captivated by the "Spirit of Tartu."
- Tartu is a student town and feels like one big campus. Everything is within walking distance.
- The location of Tartu is perfect for further travelling in Northern and Eastern Europe. Tartu is very close to Riga, Vilnius, Saint Petersburg, Helsinki, and Stockholm, making it a perfect launching pad for weekend adventures.

There are a growing number of international programmes attracting students from all over the world. Currently, the University of Tartu offers a wide range of degree and short-term study programmes taught in English or other foreign languages. The university strives to create an international student body whose diverse backgrounds enrich the teaching and research environment.
For academic year 2013/2014 UT offers over 70 study programmes in Estonian, 11 Bachelor and Master's programmes in English and over 30 PhD programmes in English. Most of the programmes take place in Tartu, however UT also has colleges in Pärnu, Viljandi and Narva and an office in Tallinn.

Applications for academic year 2013-2014 will be accepted between mid-December and mid-April (April 16) for all applicants. Academic year starts on the 1st of September 2013.
To apply prospective students need to do the following:
- Fill out and submit online application form.
- Get their documents ready. List of documents to be submitted depends on the chosen study program. Most degrees also require a proof of English proficiency and a motivation letter.
- Send their application package to UT.
