Tata Institute of Social Sciences

Since its inception in 1936, the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) has never limited itself to the mandate of a conventional university. It is known for Value-based professional education for social work and other human service professions in its MA/MSc and Mphil/PhD programmes.  TISS provides an enabling environment where students from diverse socio economic, ethnic and regional backgrounds engage with identities and diversity as a living rather than as lessons in textbooks, build knowledge through various kinds of research that is relevant to community realities and actively exchange insights and perspectives with them.

TISS has been ranked amongst the top-100 B-schools in India by several international organizations and national publications (Business Today’s Top 20 B-School ranking 2011). The Institute was also awarded a 5-Star rating by NAAC (National Assessment and Accreditation Council) in 2002 and an A grade by NAAC in November 2009, indicating a 'High Level' of academic accomplishment.

Over the years, the Institute has, among other thrusts, made a significant contribution to policy, planning, action strategies and human resource development, in several areas, ranging from sustainable rural and urban development to education, health, communal harmony, human rights and industrial relations. In all cases, the focus has been on the disadvantaged and marginalised sections of society, such as organised and unorganised labour, women, children, Dalits, and tribals.

Today, the TISS has earned recognition as an institution of repute from different Ministries of the Government of India, various State Governments, international agencies such as the United Nations, and the non-government sector, both national and international. This is due to the academic freedom leading to a positive work ethos and creativity in the Institute, strong linkages among education, research, field action and dissemination and the social commitment and responsiveness to varying social needs.

TISS has excellent resources and the environment for higher learning and research with its library, gymnasium, health centre and vibrant students’ union. 

The International Students Office takes care of all international students admitted to TISS right from Pre -departure Orientation, Orientation upon Arrival, and general welfare of students in the institute.
