The Double Masters Degree Political Science & Politics and Economics of Contemporary Eastern and Southeastern Europe offers students the opportunity to achieve both an MA from the University of Bamberg (Germany) and an MA from the University of Macedonia in Thessaloniki (Greece) within the standard period of study (24 months). The language of tuition is English at both locations. Modules taught in German at Bamberg are open to all students with an adequate command of German.

Study profile

Through this programme, graduates gain an excellent understanding of political and economic power with a special focus on Eastern and Southeastern Europe. Since this region has recently been plagued by economic and political crises, students will find an interesting and moving target for education and research endeavours. By studying modules on topics such as EU Policy-making and Integration, Ethnic Conflict and Minority Respresentation, and Economic Crises and Government Stability, students develop in-depth knowledge of the dynamics of economic events and political processes, and acquire skills in the appropriate analysis of contemporary political issues.

University sport, cultural and political activities are open for all students to join.

At the University of Bamberg, Political Science is taught as a social science with a strong empirical focus. Thessaloniki is the second largest city in Greece, with more than one million inhabitants, and more than 100,000 students. Due to its student population the city is very lively, with numerous cultural activities all year round, rendering it the cultural capital of Greece. The location of the city facilitates short visits to the neighboring countries of the Balkan region, with Sofia and Skopje a little more than an hour away by car, while Istanbul and Athens can be accessed in less that one hour by plane. Famous for its nightlife and quality of food served in its numerous bars and tavernas, as well as for the abundance of Roman and Byzantine monuments scattered throughout the cityscape, Thessaloniki was included in National Geographic Traveler's 'Best of the World 2013´ list of the 20 must-see places around the globe. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993, Bamberg is one of the most beautiful towns in Germany: With its Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque buildings, it is an architectural gem. Nevertheless, it is an affordable city. Aside from its relatively low living costs and a thriving student community, Bamberg offers an abundance of cultural events and recreational opportunities, including a lively music and club scence.

Bamberg is a town of amazing contrasts. It has a distinct regional identity, but is simultaneously home to a diverse community of German and international students. It is nestled in the Franconian countryside on the one hand, yet easily accessible by rail or car from Frankfurt, Munich or Nuremberg on the other. externer Link folgt Nuremberg's international airport is only 60km away.
