It’s the perfect setting.
For your studies too.

First things first. We’re one of the oldest and most highly esteemed universities in the UK – in fact we’ve been offering study opportunities in science and engineering since 1583.

We’ve played our part in giving Scottish education a world wide reputation for excellence – and today, we maintain some of the highest standards in the country.

Our emphasis is on supporting independent, critical thinking, multidisciplinary study and skills training – meaning our graduates leave us with the kind of highly marketable skills that build successful careers.

This approach might be completely new to you. But accepting the challenge of this new way to study will mean finding yourself immersed in a deeply stimulating and rewarding learning environment. Study methods revolve around discussion, interaction and active learning – and we encourage our students to read widely, formulate their own arguments and above all, learn how to ask the right questions.

The College of Science and Engineering

The College consists of seven Schools – Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Engineering and Electronics, GeoSciences, Informatics, Mathematics and Physics. With nearly 6000 undergraduates, 1500 postgraduates and 1126 academic staff, we’re one of the largest groupings of science and engineering students and academic staff in the UK. In the last UK Research Assessment Exercise (2001), all our Schools were awarded a score of 5 or 5*, the highest ratings – indicating our research expertise and activities are world class.

We have our own campus and all the modern facilities expected of a top ranking university. Our students have access to libraries, computer facilities and well equipped technical facilities to assist them with their study. Our Schools also run programmes of journal clubs and seminars – and we actively encourage research students to take part in local, national and international conferences.

We offer 12 month taught Masters programmes and research programmes that range from a 12 month Masters by Research to the 36 month PhD. Our taught Masters programmes are designed to give you up-to-date and relevant knowledge – and the opportunity to conduct your own research dissertation, where you’ll develop in-depth topic knowledge and project management skills. Our programmes are specifically designed to encourage the development of generic abilities like presentation skills and many of our programmes offer the chance to tailor courses to suit your specific interests or career aspirations.

Our research degrees are renowned for their rigour and multidisciplinary approach. We aim to provide students with a broad based training – and we’re leading the way in the UK with our provision of general research and generic skills training. Our 12 month Masters by Research degrees provide intensive research training and the opportunity to gain specialist knowledge through taught courses as an integral part of the degree. Our advanced degrees – MPhil and PhD – mean you can pursue in-depth research on an individual project, gain broad based research training, and attend relevant taught courses and conferences and seminars.

Student Life

Our students have the opportunity to do more than just study – we‘re home to many clubs, societies and sports facilities you can join. There’s an active University Student Association and our International Office runs programmes of activities.

The city of Edinburgh is famous for its festivals – and is widely regarded as one of the most attractive cities in Europe. This is a city of open spaces, striking skylines and beautiful architecture – from Roman ruins to medieval buildings, famous eighteen and nineteenth century town planning and new twenty first century buildings like the new Scottish Parliament. Edinburgh is home to a host of cinemas, concert halls, art galleries, sports centres and of course restaurants, bars and clubs and a flourishing cafe culture. Don’t forget it’s a city for shoppers too – offering everything from small independent shops to the UK high street chains and international designer shops.

As for Scotland itself, you’re never more then a short trip from magnificent scenery, historic buildings, cultural attractions and outdoor activities like hill walking, watersports, football and golf. Small wonder we’re renowned as the best small country in the world, please visit www.scotlandistheplace.com or www.visitscotland.com.
