What are Community Colleges? - Andre Fernandez - Spain

Community colleges are two-year institutions in the U.S.A which award the associates degree, Associate of Arts (A.A.) or the Associate of Science (A.S.), upon successful completion of a specific academic program. In addition, community colleges offer practical programs and career training in specific areas. Most of the community colleges in the USA are very academic and prepare students to transfer to four-year colleges or universities for a bachelor's degree. - Dr Elena Garate-Eskey, Santa Monica College, California, USA.

Will I be able to work as a student in the U.K? - Yousef Mashal - Bahrain

It will rarely be practicable for you to increase your income significantly by working whilst you are at university. Indeed, in some cases it may even be illegal for you to take employment, although periods of training as part of your course, are usually allowed. If there is a "prohibition on taking employment" stamp in your passport, then you will not be allowed to work. This can only be changed by application to the Home Office. It is more likely, however, for you to have a "restriction on taking employment" stamp entered in your passport. In this case you may apply for part-time work on form OSS1 which is obtainable from a local job centre in the U.K. In all cases check the conditions on your passport before you seek employment. - Dr A.J. Monty White, University of Wales, Cardiff, U.K.

How much does it cost to survive in Canada? - Mohamed Ashref - Saudi Arabia

This depends on your tastes, however, rent will cost you CD$350 or CD$400 per month, food maybe $250 or £300 per month. Tuition fees are obviously on top of this. It is worth noting that Toronto (for example) is half as expensive as Paris, and 20% as expensive as Tokyo. Canada has the lowest food costs based on income and the value of the dollar in the industrialised world. - Earl Warhus, Hansa Language Centre, Toronto. Canada

What should I do if I am interested in attending a community college? - Chris Soeharto - Indonesia

First and foremost, discuss your interest in attending a community college with your parents or counselor. Their support and encouragement is often an important influence on your education. Next, contact the international admission office of a particular community college that you're interested in and request application materials including a brochure and catalog. Review the materials carefully. You need to think about what your learning needs are and match them with the best possible community college for you. - Dr Elena Garate-Eskey, Santa Monica College, California, USA.

Does the new funding system affect me as a student going to the U.K? - Paul Yeung, Hong Kong

The main Dearing funding proposal, i.e a flat rate contribution of £1000 per year, will not affect the majority of international students in U.K higher education since they, or their sponsors, already pay full cost fees. However, one group of international students will be affected, those coming from the European Union, who are entitled to access to tuition in U.K higher education on the same terms as UK nationals. - Professor James J. Hughes, University of Kent at Canterbury, U.K.

Is a 'College' a school or a university in the USA? - Marina Gozalo, Philippines

Many Asian students go to school in Australia, where, according to American standards, a lot of educational terms are different. So, some people think that the term 'college' indicates a high school, as it does in Australia, or a school of lesser standing. In the USA, the term college is firmly rooted in the academic vocabulary! The usual difference is that a university may have divisions, with a college of arts, a college of science, and maybe a college of engineering, etc. Many private universities are still the same size that they were when called a college. Students are still called 'college students', and 'college degrees' are still what American employers want their employees to have! - Mr Lynn D Yocum, AESL International University Language Centers.
